What makes people want to steal art, risking prison and a criminal record? The majority of art thefts have a financial motive, even though it is difficult to sell well-known or “hot” art on the open market. A more unconventional motive is that of a strong desire for the object itself. In this talk, you will hear about four cases of art theft —across continents from the 19th century to the present day—that shed light on different aspects of the desire to possess by any means necessary.
