Following the Middle Ages, the Renaissance was an era of cultural, artistic, political, and economic change across Europe. Lasting from the 14th to the 17th century, this period drove the rediscovery of classical philosophy, art, and literature, and led to incredible changes in art. Because these developments were not uniform from region to region, distinct “renassance” styles were developed in the north and south. Through the artwork of Hans Memling (ca 1465-1494), Sandro Botticelli (1446-1510), and artists in the FIA’s permanent collection, director and curator Sarah Kohn will explore the similarities and differences between Northern European Renaissance and Italian Renaissance art.
